What’s New in Macon?
Macon, Georgia, is well-known for the vibrant musical community that exists within the city. Not only is this a place where concert tours and festivals frequently pass through, the domestic music scene is also alive and well. Even when a big name national group is not scheduled to play, you can find some of the best music in the U.S. being performed by local groups and musicians.
As a fan of the symphony, people are often shocked when I tell them that I listen to rock. Just because classical music has a reputation for being just for snooty old rich people doesn’t mean that it’s true. In fact, there are a ton of great bands out there that sound nothing like the symphony.
And, a lot of them will be in Macon this spring and summer. Groups like Blues Traveler, REO Speedwagon, Alabama, and Gladys Knight will be coming to Macon in the near future. A lot of these groups are iconic legends, and they promise to be huge crowd pleasers. If you’ve never seen one of these groups play, then be sure to check them out. There will also be a large number of other bands, both from the past and newer groups, coming into the city. These are just a few of the big names that will be here.
There are even a handful of big name comedians, like Ron White, coming through the city.
Macon has a vibrant community of classical musicians in it, and catching a performance, even a very small one, is an amazing experience. But if you love all kinds of music like I do, you will be severely limiting yourself if you are only looking for symphonic performances, chamber music, or renowned soloists. There are a lot of talented musicians in other musical genres, and they can be equally exciting to listen to play live. This coming summer promises to be one of the most exciting times for our musical community.
Don’t Forget the Other Stuff
The symphony might be one of the highest forms of live musical performance, but it’s certainly not the only type of music that you’ll find in Macon. You can find everything here. Local high schools and concerts will have free or nearly free performances on a regular basis, if this is something that you’re interested in. Supporting young, local musicians can be a rewarding experience, both for you and them. Not all of these youngsters will go on to be famous musicians someday, but maybe a few of them will. Being there for them as they get started on their journey can be an encouragement to them, and a lot of fun for you.
The amateur circuit isn’t for everyone. Let’s face it; there’s nothing quite like seeing a pro up on stage performing for a crowd of thousands. Every genre of music passes through the city, ranging from Country, Christian, and Classical, to Rock, Punk, and Classic Rock. You can find tribute bands, kids’ music, soul, and techno, too. Just like there are dozens (or more) of types of music, there will be dozens of different types of music going on in any given timeframe in the Macon area.
If you want to find something, it’s out there. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for tickets to the symphony, or a few passes to the next big festival, you can find them. If the box office has sold out, then be sure to check out the other online resources out there. There are almost always tickets out there to your favorite performances, you just need to look in the right places.
