MMSYO is a community ensemble sponsored by the Mercer University Townsend School of Music and the Macon Symphony Orchestra. This outstanding musical organization provides extensive rehearsal and performance opportunities to young musicians. In its fifth year, the MMSYO is comprised of more than seventy-five students, ages nine to eighteen, representing over thirty schools in Macon, Warner Robins, Perry, and the surrounding areas, and reaching as far as McDonough and Dublin.

In addition to the full orchestra, which is made up of the most advanced players, the MMSYO offers several ensembles: the string orchestra, for less experienced string players, and chamber ensembles for woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion. These smaller ensembles provide our top players with personalized instruction and difficult repertoire to challenge them outside of a full rehearsal setting.

The MMSYO’s 2010-2011 season included performances with the Warner Robins Air Force Reserve Band and the Macon Symphony Orchestra. Other highlights were a Christmas concert in Taylor County, an “Around the World” concert in Fort Valley, and a “Kaleidoscope” concert at Mercer University.

Please see our website, mmsyo.org, for audition information, orchestra news, and a schedule of upcoming performances.

The MSO will perform two Young People’s Concerts at the Grand Opera House during the 2011-12 year. Students of the Bibb County School District will enjoy these concerts on May 4, 2012 free of charge. To add to the experience, the students will receive an orchestra activity handbook.

Georgann Blum Scholarship

This scholarship is named in honor of Georgann Blum and her many years of dedicated service as chairman of the Youth Activities Committee. To learn more about how you can enhance the musical education of an aspiring young musician, call 456/301-5502.

Artist in the Classroom

Within every two year period, a MSO string trio visits each elementary school in the Bibb County School District presenting instructional, entertaining programs which feature members of the string instrument family. This tradition has gained a reputation as a highly anticipated, fun event which encourages young students to be inquisitive about symphonic music in a more relaxed environment.

Concerto Competition

The MSO holds two concerto competitions each year — one for school age students and one for college students. These winners often have the opportunity to perform with the MSO at the Young People’s concerts. The Concerto and Advanced Concerto competitions will be held January 21, 2012 in the Fickling Hall on the Mercer University campus. For entry requirements, call 478/301-5502.
