The Macon Symphony Orchestra is holding its 9th Annual Advanced Concerto Competition.

AUDITION DATE: Saturday, September 12, 2009   9:00 a.m. (Sept. 13, 2009 at 1pm if overflow)

LOCATION: Fickling Hall, McCorkle Music Building, Mercer University
1400 Coleman Avenue, Macon, Georgia

JUDGES: Three impartial musicians with expertise in piano, voice, strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.

ELIGIBILITY: Resident of Middle Georgia area (Baldwin, Bibb, Bleckley, Crawford, Dodge, Dooly, Houston, Jones, Laurens, Macon, Monroe, Peach, Taylor, Twiggs, Wilkinson counties) or an undergraduate enrolled in a Middle Georgia college or university and 18-24 years of age.  (Exceptions must be approved by a majority of the MSO Educational Programs Committee.) Piano, Voice, Strings, Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion

Previous winners are not eligible to compete.

MUSICAL COMPOSITION:  One movement, or equivalent, (not to exceed 15 minutes) of a work with a legitimate orchestral accompaniment (such as a concerto).  The student must have the music memorized and must be accompanied by a piano arrangement of the orchestral score.  Cadenzas must be played in full.  Multiple instrument combinations are ineligible.

 SELECTION OF WINNER: Students will be judged on overall musicianship, technical proficiency and the ability to play comfortably with the orchestra.  In choosing selection, the degree of difficulty should be tempered by the ease of performance.  Works selected are subject to approval by the MSO.   The winner or alternate will have an opportunity to perform the chosen selection with the Macon Symphony Orchestra on the Young People’s concert on October 9, 2009.  For performance with the MSO, the repertoire selection may be shortened to accommodate programming.  The winner will receive a certificate and a $300 cash award.
